Fear Not: A Christmas Greeting From Francis & Judith

Winter 2013

by Francis & Judith MacNutt

In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep during the watches of the night.

An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified, but the angel said, “Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”

And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with the words: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favors.” – Luke 2:8-14 (New Jerusalem Bible)

Dear Readers,

Most of the time when angels appear to people, they are so majestic that they have to open their conversation by telling human beings not to be afraid; the birth story is no exception. At the birth of Jesus the message of the angels is intensified – instead of just “Fear not” it becomes “Rejoice.” The angels actually appear to the shepherds and make the heavens ring with their praise! They not only tell them not to be afraid, but we believe they sing and praise God to make sure we as humans join them in their rejoicing!

The experience of the incarnation means we no longer need to fear; there is a new reality. We are lifted to our feet and lose our fear! God becomes human; Jesus becomes a little baby who nurses on the lap of the Virgin Mary.

Christmas Eve is still our favorite time of the year; all friends are gathered in the church at midnight. In the dark, one candle is lit, then all the candles. Something happens as we celebrate the incarnation: God has become a child again and we are no longer afraid.
